Fried Rice

This evening I took the day-old rice from the fridge and made fried rice. The rice was a little hard; in fact, it was difficult to cook it because it was clumped together in large chunks.

I heated the oil in the pan, and then I added soy sauce and garlic powder. I placed the rice in the sizzling pan and proceeded to mash the rice down. The rice was so hard that I had to take a spatula and “chop” the rice until it broke down to individual grains.

Slowly I turned the rice over, continually chopping clumps until the rice grains were browned from the soy sauce mixture. I added a little pepper and salt. When the rice was finished, I folded some diced, scrambled eggs into it.

I noticed that that the rice was still rice, but it was different now—it wasn’t the same rice that I took out of the fridge.

I thought about how the act of making fried rice from the day-old rice was similar to our own life before and after Christ.

We were once like that “old” rice— hard, crusty, and dry, but God breathed new life into us. He took our old self and transformed us into something different.

Yes, we still look very similar to what we did before, but we are so very different now—we are no longer hard, crusty, and dry. Second Corinthians 5:17 says, “… anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” (NLT).

God’s process of turning us into “fried rice” can sometimes be very slow and difficult, but gradually the changes become more noticeable; and eventually, we no longer look like “day-old rice.”

I very much prefer fried rice to hard, crusty, and dry, day-old rice. How about you?
