We Are God’s Handiwork

I believe that people are gifted with certain gifts and God gives them these gifts so that they can minister to people within the church. At one time I thought my gift was to counsel people; in fact, I went to school to get a master degree in counseling just so I would be equipped to counsel.

While going to school, I counseled people in the church. It seemed that God provided many opportunities for me to help people, but after I graduated and we moved to another church, the opportunities for counseling diminished. Now that we are at the second church, post-graduation, counseling is hardly ever conducted.

Perhaps it is because for the longest time I felt inadequate to counsel because I wasn’t licensed. I also felt inadequate because I didn’t take courses that taught me how to integrate the Bible into counseling sessions (these courses were offered during my last semester of the counseling program—too late for me to take if I wanted to graduate).

Since I was no longer counseling people or training people to counsel, I wondered, perhaps God was closing the doors on this ministry? Maybe I’m supposed to do other things?

Today I am attending a conference on Biblical Counseling. The things I heard is affirming to me in that the counseling I have been doing is biblical and my feelings of inadequacy are probably from Satan.

I think Satan tries to discourage us from doing God’s work. He discouraged me from counseling. I realize now that I don’t need a license to counsel God’s people in the church.

I have no idea in what direction God is taking me, but I know that He has assured me that I should not feel inadequate. Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (NIV).

In what ways do you feel inadequate or discouraged? If you are doing God’s work, then He has equipped you so don’t be discouraged or feel inadequate.

Really encouraged as I too have gone through academic training (theology) and often wondered why, but the Lord has everything in control, nothing is wasted and his timing is perfect. Every blessing for your onward journey.
