There are a lot of emotions regarding the Supreme Court ruling of same sex marriage—some are elated, and others are saddened by the decision. I think of Jesus’ statement in Matthew 24:32-33, “Now learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branches bud and its leaves begin to sprout, you know that summer is near. In the same way, when you see all these things, you can know his return is very near, right at the door” (NLT).
As a Christian, our focus should be on the coming of Christ and telling others about Him. We shouldn’t be distracted by the things that are occurring in our country or this world, because they are bound to happen, and they are a sign for us—“… in the last days there will be very difficult times…They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God… They will consider nothing sacred… And you will hear of wars and threats of wars, but don’t panic. Yes, these things must take place…” (2 Tim 3:1-2, Matthew 24:6, NLT).
I am reminded of a scene from the movie, “Titanic;” as the ship was sinking they were trying desperately to save as many people as they can. This is the same feeling we should have right now—“save others, snatching them out of the fire…” (Jude 1:23). We don’t know when Christ will come back, but we know the time is getting near:
“For you know quite well that the day of the Lord’s return will come unexpectedly, like a thief in the night… So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded… So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing” (1 Thessalonians 5:2, 6, 11).
So my encouragement to you, Christian, is to stay focused, do the work of Christ, reassure one another, and be courageous!
